Structured Liberal Education

Miles always structured section in a very productive and engaging way. He often devised fun activities such as a mock Roman senate debate about whether the Aeneid was pro-empire, or a creative interpretation of one of Plato's arguments (both of which were fun and also helped me understand the texts better)… He also gave helpful handouts with essay writing tips… I've never had a teacher give so much helpful feedback as part of their teaching routine.

Miles made every single section really animating and meaningful. I came away from each meeting feeling challenged intellectually. He really cared about his students and want them to see these texts from different viewpoints… He really pushes us to understand each text and to have our own interpretations… I feel like I've become a much stronger writer over this quarter. I really appreciate all the effort he put in to reading my writing and helping me improve during office hours and during paper meetings.

I could not have asked for a better instructor. I felt safe, curious, engaged, and willing to take risks under Miles's encouragement.

Shell Shock: Art and Literature of the World Wars

Miles Osgood is a superior professor. Each of his lectures were brilliant, with carefully thought out theses presented with convincing arguments. He gave me insight into art and literature that will benefit my future course work. He led discussions well, and was a careful listener.

Miles brings vast and deep amounts of knowledge to articulate the narrative arc and milestones of modernity; his selection of art and literature gave a framework to the inventiveness of narratives resulting from world wars. He’s engaging, encouraging students to participate and reacting to their comments. His depth convinced me to apply for MLA. His comments on my paper’s first draft were insightful and made my final paper so much better.

Global Modernism, Short Form

Overall Q-score for Course: 4.7/5.0

Absolutely incredible. Could not have asked for a better, more informed, more accessible, more understanding, or more organized instructor.

This was a fantastic course: the breadth of readings was fun and fascinating, the theory very useful, and the support through the writing process incredible... [M]ore than anything my enthusiasm about writing and research has increased a great deal. If Miles teaches more tutorials, take full advantage of his excellent teaching ability and take it!
